Airline Industry Information - Aer Lingus to be privatised

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2006 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Ireland's state-owned Aer Lingus airline will be privatised, following a 68-55 parliamentary vote yesterday (6 July).

According to Irish transport minister Martin Cullen, Aer Lingus will probably be floated on the Irish and British stock exchanges in September. According to The Associated Press, the government plans to keep at least a 25.1% stake.

The minister said that retaining a stake in the airline would allow the government to block takeover bids by a foreign company.
