Delta Air Lines wants to close 16 gates at Orlando International Airport.
The airline has reportedly made a request to a bankruptcy court for closing 16 of its 24 gates at the airport. Anthony Black, a spokesman for the airline, said that the closure of the gates does not mean that Delta has less of a commitment to the Orlando market and the average number of flights will not be reduced although the number of seats will be cut.
According to The Associated Press, Delta has wanted to cut the number of gates for several years, but has been unable to do so due to a 30-year lease. The airline's bankruptcy has relieved these obligations. The lease ends in 2008.
Bill Jennings, the Orlando International Airport executive director, has said that he thinks other carriers will take the gates given up by Delta.
